October was an exciting month for Do it Now Now’s initiative, My Moon Landing, as we officially kicked off our Financial Inclusion programme for Black womxn based in London and Glasgow. One of our key goals for the initiative is to help Black womxn build a strong financial future, and along with our sister programme at Black and Good which helps Black entrepreneurs develop business skills, My Moon Landing’s Financial Inclusion programme aims to provide Black womxn with indispensable support and advice they need to kick start planning for their personal financial future. The programme was run in collaboration with our Expert in Residence Afiya Titus, whose work revolves around supporting self-employed and small business owners with finance and business development. With her support, we organised two sessions in the month of October themed on personal finance and growth. The first session focussed on managing debt and leveraging credit. Participants learnt about good and bad types of debt, practices that help build a good credit score, and how to maintain a healthy financial portfolio in the current economic climate. Coupled with these learnings was also a bona fide catalogue of places to look for advice in order to get a headstart on regulating your debt and credit figures.
Our second session, cleverly titled “Mind the (Wealth) Gap”, was a masterclass on developing a positive money mindset. Attendees learned about the facts and figures behind the numerous pay gaps and other financial setbacks womxn face, paired with concrete advice on how to take steps towards overcoming them. The session also featured a comprehensive guide on beginning to invest in one’s financial future, and rules to live by when dipping your toe into the world of pensions, stocks, and shares. So far, the sessions have taught us the power of collective learning and unlearning, and have been a reminder that no step is too small when it comes to taking control of your future. We feel incredibly lucky to have been able to support our participants through this learning process and are looking forward to what the rest of the programme holds!
